RUMOURS are running rife that Sting is shortly to make an appearance at JJ's nightclub in the Grand Hyatt hotel - though whether the pop hero will be there to sing or dance is unknown.

Meanwhile, the popular nightspot is preparing to receive one of Boston's most talented and dynamic bands, Hawkeye, as its new resident entertainment starting from April 29.

Hawkeye are replacing Freddie James and the Fusion 3. Their music is described as vibrant and flamboyant, including original and cover versions of soul, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, motown and pop funk songs.

In their 15-year career together they have supported such legends as James Brown, Bo Didley and the O' Jays.

Hawkeye made their first recording debut in 1982 when they released a song called All Systems Go in honour of the first black astronaut, Geon Burgord.

The five-piece band's arrival coincides with JJ's fifth anniversary. The club is currently in the throes of a six-week-long celebration of the anniversary, which will culminate over the weekend of April 29 and 30 with what is being billed as an outrageous festival of fantasy, frivolity and fun.

One of the highlights of the event will be a lucky draw for a Ford Escort Cabriolet worth $300,000, donated by Hardy Cognac and Wallace Harper and Co. Tickets are given free to every visitor.

Lending their names to the promotion are Petrina Chow, the Channel V video jockey currently being hailed as the new Nonie, who once worked as a translator for Margaret Thatcher in Taiwan, and TVB Pearl stars Fiona Carver and Geoff Wong, who are being slated to produce and present a new television show about the lifestyles of socialites.

The weekend festival will feature a New Orleans Mardi Gras, a Rio de Janeiro carnival and the flamboyant Oxford Street-style Costume Parade from Sydney, along with magicians and jugglers.
