He is the reliable son who becomes a soldier to please his father, so that his younger brother, Jeong-hyuk, can focus on playing the piano. He often tells his comrades how proud he is of his brother’s career and simply thinking of Jeong-hyuk makes him happy.
While Seok-jin only makes a special appearance in the drama, and his character is only seen in flashbacks, Moo-hyuk’s role remains pivotal and adds charisma to the plot.
Debuting in a Korean Air commercial, actor Ha Seok-jin has an unusual background. He studied mechanical engineering at Hanyang University on a scholarship that is restricted to the top 10 per cent of students. Often nicknamed “smart and sexy” or “intelligent”, Ha is one of six celebrities in the variety show Problematic Men, where the cast are referred to as “men with sexy brains”.
While guesting at MBC’s Radio Star in 2018, the actor said that people called him a “kiss master” and upon searching “Ha Seok-jin kiss scene” on YouTube, he found that his videos had 20 million views, which became popular for his scenes with Jeon So-min in Something about 1 Percent.
2. Jin Goo as ‘Wolf’ or Master Sergeant Seo Dae-young in Descendants of the Sun (2016)
Jin Goo’s character was popular for two reasons: he was a loyal comrade and friend to Captain Yoo Si-jin, played by Song Jong-ki; and he made a good second lead couple with Yoon Myung-ju, played by Kim Ji-won, and they became known as the “Goo-Won couple”.
Their on-screen chemistry was such a hit, that it merited a cameo in 2018 drama Mr. Sunshine. Jin Goo’s portrayal of Wolf revived his career. He shared in a Soompi interview that while he fancied the military-style uniform they wore in the drama, he was embarrassed to wear it afterwards because people might think he was seeking more attention.
Before Descendants of the Sun, another of Jin Goo’s iconic roles was in Bong Joon-ho’s 2009 film Mother, where he played a local thug. His performance won him best supporting actor at the Grand Bell Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Last year, Jin Goo starred in Legal High, a remake of a Japanese series of the same name.
3. Jo Jung-souk as Eun Shi-kyung, royal bodyguard of King Jae-ha in The King 2 Hearts (2012)
Son of the king’s chief adviser, loyal friend to the crown prince, and the princess’ first love, Eun Shi-kyung’s role in the drama was quite a handful. He went from being despised by the prince, played by Lee Seung-gi, to becoming his reliable friend; as well as becoming the faithful lover of Princess Lee Jae-shin, played by Lee Yoon-ji.
Beyond dramas, Jo Jung-souk has enjoyed a fulfilling career as an actor since 2004. In 2012, he made his big screen debut in Architecture 101, which became a box office hit, and earned him best new actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. Jo remains active in the musical scene, where he started his acting career.
Jo will star in the tvN drama, Hospital Playlist, which opens on March 12.
