Alyssa Milano has defended her son from online trolls who sent him "horrid" messages and revealed why she requested donations to support his baseball team.

The 'Charmed' actress took to social media after noticing derogatory comments from Instagram users towards her son Milo Thomas. Milano runs his Instagram account on his behalf with her husband, David Buligari, to help him raise funds for his baseball team.

Milano, 51, had reached out to his 33,000 followers asking for help to ensure they could make a trip for a baseball game and instead was met with unpleasant replies.

"Regardless of how you feel about me, going on to my hardworking 12 year old son's Instagram page and leaving these kinds of messages is so horrid," she said on Instagram. "Leave the kids alone. Let them play baseball."

Alyssa Milano made her own contribution

Milano - whose net worth is estimated to be around $10million - said she had paid for "uniforms for the entire team and coaches, thrown bday parties and sponsor any kid who can't afford monthly dues" in the past.

However, she realised she would be unable to cover the expenses for this particular trip and explained that is why she asked for help: "Every parent raises money for their child's sports teams and many of them do so through GoFundMe. I am no different," Milano added.

"As much as I'd love to pay for the entire team and their families for travel, transportation, hotel, food and beverage, uniforms, trading pins and all the things teams do for this kind of trip - I cannot afford to do so. Maybe someday."

A happy outcome for Milo

Milano, who reposted several other users' fundraising appeals for their own children, posted an update to confirm Milo had reached his target - giving them something to celebrate.

"Thank you to everyone who donated," she wrote on X to her 3.4 million followers. "Milo's team's #gofundme has reached their goal for #Cooperstown. I so appreciate your donations in the midst of the vitriol."
