Fire in Hong Kongs Sham Shui Po kills man, leaves 5 injured

A fire in a flat in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po on Saturday morning killed a man and left five others injured, with the victim who died suspected to have inhaled fumes from burning charcoal.

Police had responded to multiple reports of the blaze in a building on 289 Yu Chau Street at 8.48am.

The Fire Services Department put out the flames at 9.32am with a water jet while also deploying a breathing apparatus team.

Firefighters who rushed to the scene found thick smoke billowing through a corridor in the building. A 26-year-old man was certified dead in a lower-floor flat in the block. He was suspected to have inhaled fumes from burning charcoal.

Five other people were injured and rushed to hospitals. Two of the victims, a 43-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, remain in critical condition at Caritas Medical Centre, while the other three are in stable condition.
