Here’s everything you need to know about Sunil.

Rewiring the fashion world

Globe-trotting Sunil is the first Indian model to represent L’Oréal Paris as their global ambassador. She told Vogue India: “There is now a strong push towards representation and it’s great to have new opportunities. Five years ago, they didn’t exist for a person who looks like me.”

In an interview with Brown Girl Magazine, Sunil spoke about her journey to becoming a social justice activist, saying it’s not a path she necessarily chose, but her personal experience as a dark-skinned model in the industry propelled her to share her story.

“Opportunities, even in Mumbai, were not available because of the colour of my skin or the way I looked,” Sunil told Brown Girl Magazine. “There is a standard of beauty in India that recognises fairer skin. I realised I had to just talk about this. Not because I wanted to start a revolution, but because I simply wanted to share my experiences.”

Dealing with trolls

Sunil also opened up to Vogue India about getting hateful comments concerning her skin tone on Instagram. Recalling one incident after she uploaded a photo from a shoot, she noticed a slew of negative comments mostly coming from the same account. According to the magazine, a user commented on “how she’s dark-skinned and needs to wear a swimsuit to get attention”.

“The troll was going on and on about how I wasn’t good enough to be a model – it’s definitely an Instagram account made for trolling, because it has no posts of its own but follows over a thousand people,” Sunil said.

Going from lawyer to model

Growing up in India, Sunil said she never imagined a life where she would see herself on billboards or adverts. The model, who has quickly become a household name, is a former environmental lawyer who traded the courts for being in front of the camera. She has since grown a strong fan base, with 120,000 followers on Instagram, and is one of the most recognisable faces in India.

Her moment in the spotlight

Back in 2018, when Indian rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh released the hit song Makhna, Sunil rose to fame after she got a role in the music video. At the time of its release, it was the No 1 trending song on YouTube and Google, reports Indian Express.

Her love of travel

One of the perks of being a model? The trips, of course. The cover girl has said she enjoys travel because it allows her to get lost in new places, reports Hindustan Times. Sunil also said that getting to meet people, understanding their history and learning about how they got to where they are today, has really enriched her career.
